South Dakota is one of the most pet-friendly states we’ve been to which we weren’t expecting. That was something particularly noticeable in Sioux Falls when we were looking into pet-friendly breweries and discovered that there’s a ton of them along with lots of other drinking places that allow dogs.
Shae and I decided to try to visit as many of them as possible with Truffles and ended up having time – and liver capabilities 😉 – for eight of them. Here are all the dog-friendly breweries, distilleries, bars and cafés in Sioux Falls that we visited during our eight days there.
n.b. Be sure to follow Truffles Travels on Instagram and Facebook to see all the pet-friendly places she visits on our 50 state road trip.
1) Remedy Brewing Company
The first brewery we checked out was Remedy Brewing Company, a half-mile walk from the hotel we were staying at. Dogs are allowed inside at Remedy which we appreciated as it was a little chilly outside that day and so it was nice getting to be in the warm with her.

Remedy has a good selection of beers, along with non-beer options for those like Shae who don’t care for beer.

I prefer my beers dark, so I started off with their Schwarzbier which was good, then followed up with their Vanilla Cow Tippah. Vanilla Cow Tippah is a milk stout and was very good, so I had that again when we returned for a drink a few days later on my birthday.
Shae prefers ciders, so she got a Triple Jam cider from Blake’s Hard Cider which is a blackberry, strawberry and raspberry cider which she enjoyed very much.

Remedy has two locations in Sioux Falls; the one we went to is downtown and the other is Remedy at 611 which is on the northeast side of town near Covell Lake and Sioux Falls Stadium. We’d seen a sign for BaconFest 2023 which was on my birthday and so went to check it out at their downtown location, only to discover it was at their other location.

Remedy Brewing Company, 401 E 8th St Unit 120, Sioux Falls, SD 57103
2) Glacial Lakes Distillery & Brewhouse
Glacial Lakes Distillery & Brewhouse was easily our favorite drinking place in Sioux Falls, made even better by the fact that they’re extremely pet-friendly as dogs are allowed both outside on the patio…

…and inside at the bar and other indoor seating.

Glacial Lakes makes several spirits including vodka, gin, a couple of types of rum and brandy. They’ve got an extensive cocktails menu, as well as beer and wine options.

We both ordered a spirits flight. You can pick four of the five spirits for a flight, so Shae and I both left off gin as that’s our least favorite spirit and were pleasantly surprised at how good the vodka, two rums and brandy were.

Despite being in perfectly-sized drinking glasses for small pups, Truffles stuck to water as she was our designated driver walker.

We’d initially planned to only stop in for a quick tasting, but we got chatting to Angie at the bar and other patrons and decided to stick around for another drink. I’d enjoyed their brandy most of all, so got one of those with a giant rock, while Shae ordered a Mai Tai.

One drink turned into another. Then another. And another. We’d gotten there at 5pm and ended up staying until closing time because we were having so much fun, ably assisted by their tasty spirits and cocktails and great company.
We’d needed some snacks along the way, so got a box of cayenne pepper and lime pretzel sticks which were ridiculously delicious and that wasn’t just the alcohol talking. They were excellent and incredibly flavorful.

It ended up being too much imbibing and so we had to recover the next day before returning the day after for a quick drink on my birthday.

3) Severance Brewing Company
After taking a walk around Falls Park, the three of us stopped at Severance Brewing Company for a drink as it’s right next to the park’s entrance. As with many of the other breweries and distilleries in Sioux Falls, Severance is pet-friendly both inside and outside on their deck.

Shae ordered their cider which she didn’t care for unfortunately (I don’t think it’s made by Severance, but a different cidery). I tried both their porter and a stout; I tend to like porters even more than stouts and that was no exception at Severance.

We arrived just as trivia night was starting, so we decided to join in and narrowly missed out on 4th place which would’ve won us a prize.

Severance Brewing Company, 701 N Phillips Ave Suite 110, Sioux Falls, SD 57104
4) Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars
On my birthday we went brewery/bar hopping, with one of the breweries being Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars. As with the other breweries and distilleries on the list so far, dogs are allowed inside at Covert which was awesome.

Covert had a pretty wide selection of beers available. It was also nice that they had red wine as an option as that’s what Shae was more interested in.

As for me, I ordered a flight of four of their beers – Ebb & Flow Hop Revolution Blend, What Do You Have That’s Like…, Fort Mounds Stout and Blueberry Danish Ale.
Ebb & Flow was good and was a milder IPA. Unfortunately that’s where my notes end (I was a few drinks in by this point!). From what I can remember, the What Do You Have That’s Like… was OK and the Blueberry Danish Ale was pretty good. As for the Fort Mounds stout, I feel like this was very sweet – almost like a barleywine – but I might be misremembering. I don’t think it was my favorite stout ever though.

Another reason I think I forgot to make more notes about the beers is because I got distracted by some of Covert’s board games that we decided to play. One of those was Bananagrams; I’ve always been good at word games and the photo below should give you an idea as to who won 😉

Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars, 434 E 8th St, Sioux Falls, SD 57103
5) Monks Ale House
Monks Ale House is a little different to most of the other places we visited as it’s more of a pub than a brewery or distillery. Surprisingly (considering they serve food) dogs are allowed inside, so Truffles sat under the table in our booth.

Monks Ale House has a very extensive selection of beers, with 50+ of them on draft. They have other drinks like wine available, so Shae got a red wine. With such a huge selection of beers to choose from, it was hard to pick one. However, they had a special menu supporting the Pink Boots Society, so I decided to choose something from that list.
I ended up going with the Zymurcracy which was described as a “Date Night Belgian – inspired with fire roasted dates, blueberries, vanilla and Pink Boots hops”. It reminded me of a hefeweizen and was very good.

Having been to several breweries by that point on my birthday, we were ready for some sustenance. Shae got their garlic cheese sticks & Monk’s salad with chopped chicken added on top, both of which she liked.

I ordered their Monk’s Philly sandwich minus the cheese as I don’t like cheese. The sandwich was nice and filling, plus their homemade chips were good.

As we left, we took advantage of the great photo op outside.

6) Falls Overlook Café
While going for a walk around the beautiful Falls Park in downtown Sioux Falls, we were walking past the Falls Overlook Café when I noticed a sign on the door that said they were dog-friendly. We weren’t particularly thirsty, but we love checking out pet-friendly places – especially when they’re eateries – and so we decided to pop inside to check it out.

I had some work to get done that evening and so didn’t have anything to drink, but Shae got a Triple Jam cider from Blake’s Hard Cider (the same one she’d gotten at Remedy) along with a grilled cheese sandwich.

She followed that up with a chocolate ice cream which had all kinds of other goodness inside it and was apparently delicious.

Falls Overlook Café, 825 N Weber Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57103
7) WoodGrain Brewing Co.
After finishing work one night, we decided to go for a quick drink at WoodGrain Brewing Co. as it was only a short walk from our hotel. This brewery was another one that’s pet-friendly inside and out.

WoodGrain had a good selection of different beers available:

I was pleased to see a couple of dark options on there, so I started off with their milk stout and followed it up with their Poke Attack porter. Both of them were good, but not enough to want to buy some to go.

WoodGrain was another brewery with a good selection of board games, so we played a couple of those while having a drink. There wasn’t much of an atmosphere in there that night, although to be fair it was a Tuesday evening in April – I imagine it’s much more fun in the summer, particularly on their patio out front.

WoodGrain Brewing Co., 101 S Phillips Ave Unit 100, Sioux Falls, SD 57104
8) Fernson Brewing Company
The other pet-friendly brewery we went to was Fernson, although it was my least favorite of all the ones we visited. For starters, it was the only one that wasn’t pet-friendly inside, although dogs are allowed at their tables outside.

Another reason this wasn’t my favorite is because they don’t brew any dark beers like stouts and porters which is what I prefer. About the darkest thing they have is a Vienna lager. However, if you like IPAs, sours and other fruity beers, they can certainly hook you up.

Seeing as none of their beers stood out to me, I decided to order a flight to try a few different ones. I ended up going with their Shy Giant IPA, Keller Paw Vienna lager, Lion’s Paw Vienna lager and an Orange Tangerine Curio – a sour.

Sadly, I wasn’t a big fan of most of their beers either. The Shy Giant IPA was decent, but I didn’t care for either of the two Vienna lagers. As for the Orange Tangerine Curio, I knew that was a risk as I don’t normally like sours but figured I’d give it a try seeing as there have been one or two sours I’ve tried that have been OK. This wasn’t a good one though, at least not for my taste buds, but people who do like sours might enjoy it.

Final Thoughts
Shae, Truffles and I had a great time drinking our way around Sioux Falls while we were there and loved how pet-friendly the city was. We particularly enjoyed Glacial Lakes Distillery & Brewhouse, but many of the other breweries were fun and had good beer.
Forgive me for asking, but is a flight 4 halfs? I don’t think I see anything about flights on the menus. (You can see we don’t get out much! haha!)
A flight is where you get a smaller serving of a certain number of drinks of your choosing. Both Fernson and Covert had flights of four servings, but some breweries and wineries do flights where you can pick five.
