This is the second installment in a series about the different World of Hyatt status levels. You can check out the other guides here:
Once you’ve registered as a Member, it’s time to aim for World of Hyatt Discoverist status. In addition to the benefits you receive as a Member, Discoverist status comes with some additional useful perks.
We’ve therefore produced a guide below to the Discoverist benefits and the different ways to get the status.
Important Note: You’ll only receive these benefits when you book a hotel stay directly with Hyatt, either on their website, mobile app or by phone. If you book a stay using an OTA (Online Travel Agency) like Expedia, you’re not eligible to receive any of these benefits.
World Of Hyatt Discoverist Status Benefits
1) 10% Bonus Points
This benefit gives you a 10% boost on the number of base points you earn during a stay. Base points are earned for your room rate, as well as for incidentals (e.g. room service).
2) Complimentary Premium Internet
As a Member, you receive free standard internet access, but Discoverists get premium internet access for free.
3) Free Water
You’ll also get a free bottle of water every day.
4) Room Upgrade
Guests with Discoverist status are eligible for an upgrade to a preferred room. This is based upon availability when checking in, so it’s not guaranteed.
A “preferred room” will differ from property to property. It might be a room on a higher floor or one with a nicer view.
Unfortunately this benefit isn’t available at Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels, although there’s a chance that some properties might honor the benefit anyway.
5) Expedited Check-In
When checking in, there should be a separate section at the front desk for any World of Hyatt members with Discoverist status or higher. We’ve never had to use it, but it might be helpful if you’re visiting a busy hotel and don’t want to wait in line.
6) Late Check-Out
Discoverists are able to request a late check-out up to 2pm at no cost. This is subject to availability, so it’s not a guaranteed benefit.
7) Pearl Status With M life Rewards
This is a higher status level with M life Rewards than the Sapphire status that regular Members receive.
8) Exclusive Reservation Line
You also get access to a special line that’s only available for members with status.
These benefits are in addition to the benefits you receive with Member status:
- 10% discount
- Complimentary internet (superseded by premium internet)
- Waived resort fees
- Sapphire status with M life Rewards (superseded by Pearl Status)
- Category 1-4 free night award after staying at five brands
How To Get World Of Hyatt Discoverist Status
There are five ways to get Discoverist Status:
1) 10 Nights In A Calendar Year
Unlike many other hotel loyalty schemes, a qualifying night doesn’t include reward nights where a stay is booked using only points. (Edit – Since the start of 2018, award stays booked using points are now classed as elite qualifying nights.)
A qualifying night with World of Hyatt is one where you’ve paid an eligible cash rate, booked your stay using the Points + Cash option or booked using all points.
2) 25,000 Base Points In A Calendar Year
Seeing as you earn 5 base points per dollar during stays, you’d have to spend $5,000 per year at Hyatt brands in order to earn Discoverist status this way.
3) Hold 3 Qualifying Meetings Or Events In A Calendar Year
A qualifying meeting is classed as a meeting or conference where a minimum of ten guest rooms are paid for. Meeting planners don’t necessarily have to pay for the rooms themselves; this can be useful for conferences where attendees pay for their own room.
Alternatively, it can be a meeting or conference where the planner rents a meeting room or conference space and/or purchases catered or banqueted food or beverages from the hotel.
4) Hyatt Credit Card
This is probably the easiest way to get Discoverist status, as the Hyatt credit card issued by Chase comes with this status automatically.
Shae and I both have the Hyatt credit card and so we’re both Discoverists. Here’s another reason we have the card.
5) Pearl Status With M life Rewards
I mentioned above that as a Discoverist member, you also get Pearl status with M life Rewards. That’s actually a reciprocal arrangement, so if you happen to already have Pearl status with M life, you can match that to Discoverist status with World of Hyatt.
You can find out more details about how to match your status here.
Summary
World of Hyatt Discoverist status provides some nice perks, although they’re not particularly valuable. Premium internet, late check-out and a free bottle of water are nice to have, as is the 10% bonus on base points.
I find it strange that room upgrades aren’t available at Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels though, especially since these two brands make up about half of the entire Hyatt hotel portfolio.
Having said all that, it’s great that you get this status for simply having their credit card. Despite the annual fee, it’s a card that’s worth keeping year-after-year because of the anniversary free night certificate, so getting Discoverist status too is a bonus.
Question
What’s your experience as a Discoverist member? Have you ever received any amazing upgrades or other great perks from this status? Let us know in the comments below.
Hi,
Just a question. Once you reached discoverist status, how long do you keep this status?
Kind regards,
Olivier
You get the status through to February of the second calendar year following qualification. e.g. If you were to gain Discoverist status in June 2018, you’d have the status until February 2020.
