You know when you’re scrolling through your social media feeds and you see something so cute and amazing you just have to find out where it is? And so often it’s on the other side of the country or the world from you and you’re left bereft.
Not this time.
My friend shared a video of someone making a unicorn out of cotton candy. I figured it was in Asia where they make the coolest shaped food (like hamster shaped buns) but I looked anyway. We were in Irvine, CA, I mean, it’s only a 14 hour flight to Asia right??
That’s when I saw it was from Polar Playground in HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA. Wait…this amazing experience was just a 23 MINUTE DRIVE AWAY!?

I almost threw Stephen and Truffles in the car right then. But I waited for the perfect Sunday. We went to Polar Playground and then to the Huntington Beach Dog Beach. It was a day of dreams come true for everyone. Well, for everyone except our budget-master, Stephen Pepper… but *shrug* it’s unicorn-shaped cotton candy!
Welcome to Polar Playground – an ice cream and cotton candy shop in Huntington Beach, CA where the dreams of children, and an adult’s inner child, come true! The cotton candy artists are just that – artists – and the works they create with spun sugar is a joy to watch. There’s a video at the end of the post for you to watch how my cotton candy unicorn was made.

As it’s the Polar Playground we also felt we needed to try the ice cream. They have great flavors, it’s tasty, and reasonably priced. But that’s not really why you’re there.

We ordered the cotton candy unicorn. Be aware that you’re eating a work of art and as you’re likely there to have some fun remember that this is a one-off and totally worth the experience and fun at $17 per cotton candy sculpture. Stephen the budget-master raised his eyebrows and then smiled and said lets do it!
One artist is the cotton candy maker and the other sculpts. One worked the face and head while the other created the hair. Each new color was poured in and so each color of the rainbow flowed from one to the next seamlessly.
The cotton candy unicorn’s face is entirely cotton candy except for the eyes (which are little Oreos) and the horn (which is cake cone), so the entire thing is edible. When I shared it, people originally thought it was only the hair that was edible. Nope. It’s the whole thing!

The final pieces are swirled and attached and the cotton candy unicorn was ready to go!
I was in awe – and aww – at the cuteness of my cotton candy unicorn. Here’s her photoshoot before we took her outside to enjoy.
We grabbed Truffles and sat down to get down to the business of eating this work of sugar art. Truffles was a little unsure… it was as big as her!
One final kiss and it was time to enjoy!
Watch the whole experience here and see me finally jumping in to eat this masterpiece. If you find yourself near Huntington Beach, CA you definitely need to stop in at Polar Playground!
[…] Earlier in this post I mentioned some amazing cotton candy we had in Los Angeles. That was from Polar Playground in Huntington Beach which makes some incredibly artistic creations using cotton candy. There are all kinds of cool designs, with Shae picking a unicorn for hers.
