Tybee Island, Georgia supposedly has lovely beaches.
I guess we’ll never know.
We wanted to know. We even drove from Savannah to Tybee Island one morning to find out for ourselves, but we’d made one mistake.
We’d not checked whether or not dogs are allowed on Tybee Island’s beaches.
Spoiler alert: they’re not.
We arrived at the beach, paid for parking and grabbed everything from our car for a fun day at the beach, only to see this as we headed into the sand.
Prohibited: Pets.
Crapweasel.
Before heading off on our 50 state road trip, we’d lived in Portsmouth, VA which is a short drive from Virginia Beach. In Virginia Beach, dogs aren’t allowed on the beach from 10 am to 6 pm in the summer, while they’re allowed on the beach all day during the off-season (Labor Day to Memorial Day.)
We’d visited Hilton Head Island a few weeks prior to our trip to Tybee Island and they had similar rules to Virginia Beach. As it was off-season, Truffles was allowed on the beach and she had an amazing time chasing her ball off-leash.

We’d naively assumed that Tybee Island would have the same rules, so before visiting we didn’t think to check if dogs were allowed.
Unfortunately there’s not a single dog-friendly beach anywhere on Tybee Island.
Lesson learned – from now on we’ll always check if Truffles can join us.
