Shae and I recently spent six nights in Savannah, Georgia on our 50 state road trip.
It was amazing.
It’s a beautiful, historic city with so much to offer both visitors and residents alike. We could’ve happily spent much longer there as there was still so much to explore.
There are many reasons to visit, but here are 7 reasons why we loved Savannah, Georgia.
1) Forsyth Park
We’d booked an Airbnb just a few blocks away from Forsyth Park which turned out to be a great location. Forsyth Park is a 30 acre park in Savannah’s historic district.
There were several paths where we took Truffles for a walk, it had a farmer’s market on the Saturday morning we visited and a stunning fountain in the center.

2) Great City For Walking & Cycling
Savannah’s a very pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city. We took advantage of this by renting a tandem bike and touring all 22 of the city’s squares.

3) Byrd’s Cookies
Savannah’s home to the Byrd Cookie Company. We happened across their store in Charleston, South Carolina and fell in love with their cookies.
During our time in Savannah, we made sure to not only visit both their stores downtown, but we also went on a factory tour where we got to go behind the scenes and try some freshly-baked cookies.

4) Pet Friendly
Although we didn’t have much luck on nearby Tybee Island, Savannah is very pet-friendly. There are all kinds of boutique pet stores (such as Woof Gang Bakery), as well as other stores that allow dogs inside (Black Dog General Store and more).

5) Street Drinking
Unlike most other cities around the US, you’re allowed to drink alcohol from an open container in Savannah.
There are a couple of rules: it has to be in a 16 oz plastic cup and you have to remain within the historic district.
We took advantage of this on River Street – Shae with an Angry Orchard rosé cider and me with a Bad Mother Shucker oyster stout. Cheers!

6) Full Of History
Savannah is Georgia’s oldest city, having been established almost 300 years ago. There are all kinds of walking tours that can help you learn about its history; we did an evening ghost tour booked at a discount through Groupon.

7) Free Transportation
Although we didn’t take advantage of it while we were there, Savannah offers free transportation for visitors. There’s an express shuttle that takes two different routes around the historic district, as well as a ferry that transports passengers between three landings.

Your Thoughts
So those are 7 reasons why we loved Savannah, Georgia, but what about you? If you’ve visited Savannah, what were your favorite parts?
We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
I used to live in Savannah and what I really miss is spring. It comes early and is glorious! Azaleas everywhere. Victory Drive has a median with azaleas. It seems like everything is blooming at once. (You left just a little too soon, I think. Full bloom should only be weeks away.) Where I live in the midwest, spring is more gradual and not as flamboyant.
We’d love to return to Savannah, so if we do it might have to be in spring.
Stephen, catching up. We had a tree fall on our roof Mar 2 and it was my office. Therefore little access to my computer until I could clean up major debris (including 3 tree limbs) plaster, insulation and then dealing with all the heat going up the ceiling (cold!!) Took me all weekend. Didn’t want to do much more until the adjuster came a week later.
Love your creativity with the rolling kitchen–hopefully that will help cost-wise and calorie-wise.
All the best.
P.S. one of these days I want to visit Savannah; those were great pix. Love Shae’s tights.
Oh no, we’re so sorry to hear about your roof – we hope everything’s getting back to normal at home.
Thanks for the kind comments about the kitchen and Shae’s tights! You (and everyone else in the world!) needs to visit Savannah – it’s such a beautiful and interesting city.
