Mansfield, Ohio is perhaps best known as the location where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed. A city of almost 50,000 people, it’s found just off I-71 about halfway between Columbus and Cleveland.
Shae and I spent a week there staying with friends and ate out several times. There seemed to be many great restaurants there, but we didn’t have time (or money!) to eat at all of them.
Our friends took us to several of their favorites which we enjoyed too, so here are 5 great places to eat in Mansfield, Ohio.
Panchos Tacos
The four of us went to Panchos Tacos for taco Tuesdays. Two tacos normally cost $5, but they cost less on Tuesdays. I’m not entirely sure how much cheaper they are as there were no signs up about it and our friends treated us to lunch.

I ordered four steak tacos that came topped with onion and cilantro and were absolutely delicious. I’d ordered four as cheap ‘taco Tuesday’ tacos are usually fairly skimpy on the meat.
Not at Panchos Tacos. I should’ve taken a couple to finish off later on, but they were so tasty that I ate all four there and then.

Two Cousins Pizza Co.
Our first meal out in Mansfield was lunch at Two Cousins Pizza Co. Their pizzas range from a 6″ personal size up to their 28″ Gut Buster.
I ordered a 6″ personal pizza with six toppings – pepperoni, Italian sausage, bacon, beef, onions and green pepper – and light on the cheese. Considering it was a small pizza, I’d been expecting to receive only a few pieces of each topping. I was therefore excited to receive the following:

The pizza was loaded with toppings and was excellent. Shae ordered a plain cheese pizza and enjoyed hers too. Our friends got a large (or maybe extra-large) pepperoni pizza with a stuffed crust for them and their kids.

Two Cousins also offers chocolate-filled dough balls for dessert, so we got eight for the table to share. The dough balls were good, although it was probably more dough than I needed that day.

Buckeye Bakery
As if Two Cousins Pizza Co. hadn’t given us enough dough in our lives, we twice got donuts from Buckeye Bakery.
I think I tried three or four of their donuts and they were all excellent. They aren’t decorated in a particularly fancy way, but they don’t need to be – Buckeye Bakery has some of the best donuts I’ve ever had.

Wiener King
Our friends lived close to Wiener King but had apparently never eaten there despite driving past it many times. I love chili dogs – we did a chili dog taste test in Cincinnati – so we decided to go there for lunch one day.

They have all kinds of hot dog and sausage options (as well as burgers); all three of us ended up going for a footlong chili dog. One of the interesting features of their menu is all your deep-fried side options. This includes mozzarella sticks, zucchini sticks, jalapeño poppers, cauliflower and more. We got a side of fries and a side of zucchini sticks to share. The sausages were a little anemic looking, but still tasted good.

Wiener King has several dessert options, but the most interesting-looking one was the deep-fried funnel cake fries. Topped with powdered sugar, they were very good, albeit a little greasy.

Whit’s Frozen Custard
On our final evening in Mansfield, we all went out to Whit’s Frozen Custard for dessert. Shae ordered a chocolate cone, while I went for what I think they’d called a Mansfield Ruby – raspberry, fudge and macadamia nuts. It was very good, although I probably should’ve ordered it without the nuts.

One of the nice things about Whit’s is that they offer special ice creams for dogs. It’s not just a small amount of soft-serve like some places, but a scoop of vanilla topped with a dog biscuit – so cute!

Leaning tower of pizza.
We had a couple of people suggest there on Facebook too – we’ll definitely have to give it a try next time we’re in Mansfield.
