Having already visited Grandpa’s Cheesebarn, Sweeties and Melt Bar & Grilled earlier in the day, our whirlwind food tour didn’t stop there. Our next stop: Brewnuts.
Brewnuts in Cleveland, Ohio is known for two things – craft beer and donuts. And not just any donuts – donuts that are infused with beer.
Yep, beer.

Found in an unassuming brick building on the corner of Detroit Ave and W 65th St, we were glad to see that there were still some donuts left. That’s because we didn’t arrive until 4:15pm on a Thursday afternoon, which is one of the days where they stay open until they’ve sold out.

They’ve made over 200 different donut flavors over the last five years since they opened. Brewnuts only has a limited selection of flavors each day though, with these flavors available the day we visited:
- Classic glaze
- Strawberry with sprinkles
- Chocolate malt
- Maple bacon
- Rice Krispie
- Strawberry chesecake
- Vegan-friendly orange push pop filled

And yes, that is a leg lamp. That’s because Cleveland is home to the house from A Christmas Story. We visited the house on a previous trip to Cleveland but sadly didn’t have enough time to return this time around.
We had a dilemma though. Half a dozen donuts cost $16 but there were seven donut flavors on the menu. Rather than get all seven, we decided to sacrifice the strawberry with sprinkles flavor seeing as we’d be getting a strawberry cheesecake donut.

We didn’t have time to stop for a drink as we wanted to get out of Cleveland before the traffic got even worse. If you wanted to sit and enjoy your donuts though, you could have a cold one at the same time.

Now, the all-important question – what are beer-infused donuts like? The first one we tried was the plain glazed. Picking it up out of the box, I was amazed at how soft and squishy it was – it’s quite possibly the softest donut I’ve ever had. With beer as one of the ingredients, it was also an interesting flavor. To be honest though, Shae and I both prefer plain glazed donuts from Krispy Kreme. Having said that, I loved the texture and airiness of it.
Trying the other flavors, I was more impressed. The beer flavor’s balanced when there are other flavors to complement it, so the strawberry cheesecake and maple bacon donuts in particular were very good. The chocolate malt and Rice Krispie topped donuts were also good, although we weren’t particularly impressed with orange push pop filled one. I’ve a feeling that might have more to do with it being vegan-friendly though.

Overall though, Brewnuts in Cleveland, Ohio is definitely worth visiting for the experience of having beer-infused donuts. Next time we’re in the city we’ll hopefully have an opportunity to return and enjoy a draft beer at the same time.
