One of the best things about the Airbnb we stayed at in Montpelier VT is that it took less than ten minutes to walk downtown.
That meant we ended up walking to downtown Montpelier every day of our stay as it’s such a cute state capital. The day after we arrived, Shae and I decided to head downtown to find somewhere for dinner.
We weren’t sure if we’d eat somewhere pet-friendly, so Truffles stayed back at the apartment. In the end, we decided to eat outside at a Mexican restaurant called Julio’s Cantina, so Truffles could’ve come along after all. Here’s our review of Julio’s Cantina.
After sitting down, we took a look at their extensive drinks menu. Julio’s Cantina has a ton of tequila-based drinks, along with many others.

Seeing as we were at a Mexican restaurant, Shae ordered a margarita. The wine was reasonably priced, so I got a glass of the Merlot.

We also ordered a bowl of chips and salsa – the first order’s free, while refills are $1.50 a time. Both were tasty, although I like my salsa a little spicier normally.

Deciding on what to have for dinner was a little more tricky as there were all kinds of tasty-looking options on the menu.

Shae and I both decided to go for tacos. There’s a lime cilantro tilapia recipe that I love making; I was curious what lime cilantro tilapia tacos would taste like, so I ordered those. They came topped with pineapple and serrano chile salsa and had sides of rice and beans.

The tacos were OK, but the overwhelming flavor was the pineapple salsa. I couldn’t taste the lime cilantro tilapia which was a shame as that’s the reason I’d ordered it. If you want something fairly light and don’t mind sweet tacos, this’d be a good option for you.
Shae ordered a couple of different tacos from the street tacos section of the menu. One was ground beef, while the other was chicken, chorizo and goat cheese. These came with a choice of rice or beans, so she went for the rice.

She enjoyed both of her tacos, especially the chicken, chorizo and goat cheese taco. I had a bite of that one and it was excellent – I’d definitely order that next time at Julio’s Cantina. The spicy chipotle garlic shrimp taco also sounded good, so I’d probably go for one of each of those rather than the lime cilantro tilapia tacos.
We were both fairly full by this point, so passed on their desserts. Having said that, there was a gelato shop a few doors down, so we got a scoop on the way back to the apartment.
Final Thoughts
Although I didn’t love my tacos from Julio’s Cantina, I still think it’s worth visiting if you find yourself in Montpelier VT. Our server was friendly, the tacos Shae ordered were good and their drinks were priced pretty reasonably.
