When you’re traveling with a pet, it can be hard to find hotels to stay at. Not all hotels accept pets and those that do have different pet policies.
Some allow dogs up to 80 lbs, whereas others only accept dogs up to 20 lbs. Most don’t accept cats, although a few do. Some might charge $100 per stay (even for one night stays), others cost $15 per night while others allow pets to stay for free.
Navigating these huge differences in hotel pet policies and pricing is a pain. We’re living in hotels and Airbnbs on our 5 year, 50 state road trip, so this is something we need to investigate every week. To help you out, here’s our guide for how to find each hotel’s pet policy.
This guide is broken down by chain and, in a few cases, by brand. With all the screenshots it’s a fairly long post, so click on the name of a loyalty scheme below to skip ahead to that section.
Hilton Pet Policy
First of all, do a search for the location where you want to stay. On the search results page, select the ‘Pets allowed’ box and click ‘Apply Filters’. The results will be filtered to only show pet-friendly properties in the Hilton chain.
To see the specific policy of each hotel, click on the property’s name and select ‘View hotel site’. Scroll down and you’ll see the pet policy on the left hand side.
IHG Pet Policy
To find whether pets are allowed at IHG hotels, start off by doing a search on the home page. On the results page, click on ‘Filter & Sort’, choose ‘Pets Allowed’ in the ‘Amenities’ section and click ‘Apply’.
That’ll leave a list of pet-friendly IHG hotels for you to choose from. Each property has different rules though and unfortunately IHG doesn’t have a consistent method of displaying their pet policies.
For example, when clicking on a Holiday Inn property, scroll down to the ‘We’ve Got You Covered’ section and click on ‘Pet Policy’.
With the Holiday Inn Express brand, their pet policy is further down the page on the right hand side.
For Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites – their extended stay brands – there’s a link to that specific property’s pet policy further down the page.
Marriott Pet Policy
If you want to know Marriott’s pet policy, do an initial search from the home screen. On the results page, click on ‘All Filters’ in the top right corner, select ‘Amenities’, choose ‘Pets Welcome’ and then click ‘Apply’.
Choose a hotel from the list and scroll down until you get to the ‘Key Amenities’ section. Click on the ‘All Hotel Details’ button…
…and you’ll be taken to a page listing their pet policy.
In my experience, Marriott’s brands have fairly expensive pet fees, often $100 per stay. That’s not so bad for longer stays as it reduces the cost per night, but it can be prohibitively expensive for stays of only one night.
SPG Pet Policy
One thing I like about SPG is that the majority of their hotels seem to be pet friendly and often don’t charge a pet fee. The downside is that finding out if an SPG hotel allows pets is a little tedious.
First of all, you need to do a search. The results page doesn’t allow you to filter the list for pet-friendliness, so you have to click on a property to find out.
The nice thing is that it’s then pretty easy to find the policy. Scroll down until you get to the ‘Essentials’ and ‘Rooms’ sections. Under ‘Rooms’, it states ‘Pets Allowed’ if the property’s pet friendly.
To discover any particular requirements or costs, click on ‘Announcements’ under ‘Essentials’. That’ll take you to a page with all the hotel’s policies; click the plus sign next to ‘Pet Policy’ to discover their rules and pet fees (if applicable).
Hyatt Pet Policy
Similar to SPG, Hyatt’s search results don’t allow you to filter for pet-friendly policies. You therefore have to click on a specific property to find out if they’ll allow you to bring your dog.
Unfortunately, the location of their pet policies isn’t consistent. With the Hyatt Place brand, click on the link for ‘Hotel Features’.
From there, click the ‘Pet-Friendly’ link (or sometimes the ‘Pet Policy’ link) in the right sidebar.
That page will display any weight restrictions and costs involved.
For Hyatt Regency, you might need to scroll down the property’s page to view their specific pet policy.
Radisson Pet Policy
For hotels that are part of the Radisson Rewards loyalty scheme, do an initial search on the home page. Once it’s displayed the results, scroll down to the ‘Hotel Amenities’ section on the left and select ‘Pets Welcome’. That’ll filter the results to only show the properties where you can bring your dog(s).
Radisson Rewards is TERRIBLE for displaying their pet policy. They don’t have a specific section where a pet policy is listed, nor how much would be charged. They’ll sometimes show you how much it costs before making a reservation but not always. To get a definitive answer, you might need to call the hotel.
In the instance below, I got lucky and found a property that actually disclosed their pet fee. Clicking on ‘amenities and services’…
…brought up this page advising how much it’d cost to bring a dog.
Choice Hotels Pet Policy
It’s a little easier discovering the pet-friendliness of Choice Hotels properties. To do that, first do a search on the home page. When it lists the results, click the ‘Pet Friendly’ box on the left hand side beneath ‘Amenities’.
With the results filtered, click on a property’s name and scroll down. Under ‘Policies’, you’ll see how much it costs to bring your dog per night or per stay.
Wyndham Pet Policy
Wyndham works in much the same way as Choice. Do an initial search, then on the results page choose ‘Pets Allowed’ in the ‘Amenities’ section.
With only pet-friendly Wyndham hotel brand properties listed, click on a hotel’s name. On the right hand side, there’ll be a list of ‘Key Amenities’; click the link for ‘See All Hotel Policies’…
…and you’ll get a popup displaying the cost and any pet restrictions where applicable.
Best Western Pet Policy
To find pet-friendly Best Western properties, do a search on the home page. When it lists the results of Best Western hotels in that area, check the ‘Pet Friendly’ box on the left hand side.
Click on a property, then scroll down the page with the hotel’s details and you’ll find their pet policy.
Drury Hotels Pet Policy
The search results page on the Drury Hotels website doesn’t allow you to filter for pet-friendly properties. You’ll therefore need to click on a property and scroll down. Click on ‘View Hotel Policies’ to see if they allow pets and, if they do, how much it’ll cost.
La Quinta Pet Policy
One of the nice features about La Quinta is that almost 99% of their hotels are pet-friendly. Not only that, but they don’t charge a pet fee either. Edit: As of February 2019 and as part of their integration into the Wyndham Rewards scheme, more properties will now be charging a pet fee. It’s somewhat reasonable though as the maximum charge will be $40 per stay which is still less than many other hotels charge.
That means there’s nothing you need to do in order to find out if a La Quinta’s pet friendly, other than to be aware of the properties listed below that don’t accept dogs.
Red Roof Inn Pet Policy
Similar to La Quinta, Red Roof Inn is a pet friendly chain that charges no pet fee.
It’s always best to check each property’s pet policy though as they might have some restrictions. For example, the Red Roof Inn Chicago – Alsip only allows one pet.
So if you ever travel with pets, I hope this helps you find whether your furry friends can come along for the ride.
