I’m not particularly adventurous when it comes to pizza. I tend to go for whichever option has the most different kinds of meat and have them go light on the cheese.
However, when meeting up with friends for dinner and drinks at The Mitten Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I decided to push the boat out.
I’m glad I did as they served up one of the best – if not the best – pizzas I’ve ever had. Here’s a review of our meal at The Mitten Brewing Co.

We’d called ahead to see if they allowed dogs on their outdoor deck. That’s because we’d spent a few hours in the car driving from Manteno, Illinois and so didn’t want our dog Truffles to have to go straight from the car into her crate at the Airbnb we were staying at.
Thankfully, they do allow dogs on their deck and it proved to be popular with several dog owners. It seemed to be especially popular with new dog parents as there were several puppies there while we ate.

If you’d prefer to sit inside, there’s plenty of indoor seating, both at tables and at the bar.

Unsurprisingly given its name, The Mitten Brewing Co. has a good selection of craft beers.

The bar / restaurant also offers beer flights. There’s space for six, but our server said that you could order fewer than that if you wanted.
Unfortunately they were out of a couple of stouts that I’d have been interested in trying, but there were still plenty of other good options on there and so I decided to get a full flight of six beers.

For those that don’t know (we have quite a few readers in the UK), Michigan is often referred to as the Mitten State due to its shape, hence the name of The Mitten Brewing Co. They lean into this by serving the flights on a wooden board shaped like Michigan which I thought looked awesome.

I enjoyed all six of these beers, but here they are in order of my preference:
- Mitten Milk Stout
- Mango Gold
- Triple Crown Brown
- Mitten Hefeweizen
- Mitten Pale Ale
- Teddy Raspberry
Shae isn’t a big fan of beer, so she went for a raspberry cider which she thought was delicious.

With drinks all sorted, it was time to decide what we wanted for dinner. Here are The Mitten Brewing Co.’s menu options:

Like I said earlier, I usually go for whichever pizza has the most meat, but The Mitten Brewing Co. had so many tasty looking options. Hog Heaven with the BBQ sauce, pulled pork, cajun aioli, etc. sounded interesting. Da Meat Hook with four different meats sounded good, as did Westerdog with chili beans sauce, all-beef franks, etc.
However, another pizza on the menu caught my eye – Thai Cobb. With Thai red curry sauce, marinated shrimp (or chicken), broccoli, red onions, shredded carrots, roasted peanuts, cilantro and mozzarella, it had an unusual but potentially delicious combination of toppings. Not to mention that I love puns and so I thought the name Thai Cobb was great! For fellow Brits or anyone else not familiar with baseball, Ty Cobb was a baseball player who played for the Detroit Tigers in Michigan.

It turned out to be an excellent choice. Their Thai Cobb pizza was amazing and so full of flavor. I think it was the Thai red curry sauce that really enhanced the pizza – it had a tremendous amount of flavor with a decent level of spice.
I also enjoyed the pizza base, along with the other toppings. It was definitely unusual having shrimp on a pizza, but it wasn’t a bad option. Although chicken was an option instead of shrimp, I can get chicken on pizza anytime, so shrimp seemed like the better choice.
Shae tends to prefer regular cheese and tomato pizzas, so she ordered the margherita.

She thought her pizza was OK, but it was apparently a bit bland and so she wasn’t as effusive about her choice as I was.
Final Thoughts
Shae was the one who had found The Mitten Brewing Co. for us to eat at and I’m glad she did. With fun beer flights and delicious pizza (well, for me anyway), it’s definitely worth visiting.
