There was one thing that I was desperate to do in Virginia while we were here this fall and it’s slim pickings in most of the state – except the Charlottesville area – apple picking!
We found a great spot for it on our last full day in the area. So after a visit to Monticello, Stephen and Truffles picked me up and we went (basically) next door for some family fun at The Carter Mountain Orchard.
When you arrive, go to the registers in the farm shop, or find an employee in the apple area to get information on how and where to pick the apples that day. The day we visited we were picking Jonagold apples, but other apples may be available on other days.
You can get bags, but we brought our own, and followed the directions towards the orchard. There are instructions on the way down about how to pick apples and when you find your spot you’ll see a “best picking here” sign.

The views on the way down are gorgeous!
Truffles started the picking action.

Then I picked some.
Then Stephen did some picking.
A family that picks apples together – stays together!
You get to have one sample per family. We decided to share.
We loved that the Carter Mountain Orchard was dog-friendly so that Truffles could join in the fun. They had a great outside seating area to enjoy all kinds of apple products – wine, cider, cookies, donuts and more!

The view was second to none. During the summer they offer sunset evenings to hear music and watch the beautiful sunsets over the mountains.
Overall, we had a wonderful time and highly recommend the Carter Mountain Orchard when you find yourself in the Charlottesville area.
