Shae and I have eaten a lot of BBQ on our road trip so far, with two of my favorites being Swadley’s BBQ in Oklahoma City, OK and Rodney Scott’s in Charleston, SC.
I now have a new BBQ place that rivals both of those as my favorite – Cou-yon’s Cajun Bar-B-Q in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We heard about it when Beth from Exploring With Beth commented on our post asking for suggestions of things to do in Louisiana. I’m really glad that we made the time to go there for lunch on our final day in Baton Rouge as it was amazing.

We’d arranged a 4pm late check-out from our hotel to give us time to head into downtown Baton Rouge, then we stopped at Cou-yon’s for lunch on the way back to the hotel. It was pretty busy when we arrived, but we were able to find an empty table.

We were in Baton Rouge at the end of January, so the restaurant was decorated ready for Mardi Gras.
We took a look at a laminated menu while sitting down, but you order your meal up at the counter where there’s a larger menu you can look at.

I love baked potatoes, so their meat or seafood stuffed baked potatoes sounded amazing. However, when it comes to BBQ I’m a sucker for plates with several types of meat. I therefore went for their three meat plate, as did Shae. They ask what kind of BBQ sauce you’d like when ordering. I think the options were regular, spicy or smoky, so I ordered spicy and Shae got smoky.
After ordering your meal, you take a seat at your table. You give your name when ordering, so they call out your name when it’s ready and bring it over to your table.
For my three meats I ordered the moist brisket, chicken and pulled pork. The BBQ plates come with two 4oz sides, two slices of Texas toast, pickles and onions. I got the yellow potato salad and baked beans as my sides, while Shae chose the mac & cheese and baked beans. The beans came with pork in them and were very good, as was the potato salad.

Even better than the sides though was the meat. All three types of meat were excellent. The pulled pork was very good, the seasoning on the chicken was delicious, while the moist brisket was the best part of all. It was incredibly tender and flavorful – definitely some of the best brisket I’ve ever had.
There was so much food that we both took half of our meals to go for later that evening. That wasn’t the end of the eating though as there was dessert to be had. Shae’s favorite BBQ dessert is banana pudding, so she ordered that and liked that too.

One of the reasons I was keen on checking out Cou-yon’s is because Beth had mentioned they have bread pudding with Jack Daniel’s whiskey sauce as a dessert option. What’s strange is that I’m not the biggest bread pudding fan and although I like whiskey, I don’t really care for Jack Daniel’s. It sounded like an intriguing option though and I’m so glad I ordered it as it was the tastiest bread pudding I’ve ever eaten.

I can’t emphasize how good it was – even if you’re not a big fan of bread pudding, you’ll love this as the sauce is incredibly flavorful. Shae tried it and was a little disappointed that she hadn’t ordered it herself, so we shared each other’s desserts. The portion size was very good too, so it pained me that we were so full by the end that we couldn’t quite manage to polish it all off.
Final Thoughts
If you ever visit Louisiana’s state capital, you need to eat at Cou-yon’s Cajun Bar-B-Q. Writing this post has me salivating over the memory of the meal, so hopefully we’ll end up back in Baton Rouge at some point in the future.
