When I’m asked, “If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?,” my answer is always “ice cream.”
Chocolate ice cream specifically. I LOVE ice cream. A good ice cream just fills my heart with joy. Add a cake cone and I’m in heaven.
I usually have plain chocolate or some version of fudge brownie. But a few years ago at a Jeni’s in Columbus, OH I was able to try a chocolate cayenne ice cream and my life was forever changed. I don’t get it often but I think about it every time I’m in a new ice cream shop. We love trying new ice cream places, so it was no surprise when we finished our hike up to the Mill Mountain Star that I requested a stop at Blue Cow Ice Cream.

Blue Cow Ice Cream in Roanoke, VA was a dream ice cream shop for so many reasons, one of which is that one of the seasonal flavors this year was… chocolate cayenne! We went to Blue Cow Ice Cream 3 times while we were in Roanoke over 2 weeks. (Side note: we just discovered there’s a Blue Cow Ice Cream in Virginia Beach which is close to where we used to live. How did we not know this?!)
On our first visit we shared their chocolate fudge brownie option. It was so creamy and smooth. The chocolate and brownie pieces were incredibly rich. They have outside seating to enjoy so Truffles was able to relax with us. It was just a great stop after our hike. You can also see over the river and there’s a trail along the river where you can walk with your ice cream if you want.
Stephen told me about the chocolate cayenne flavor as we were leaving and I was determined to try it before we left the area.

The second time we visited Blue Cow Ice Cream was when we introduced my mom and stepdad to it. After visiting the Roanoke Pinball Museum with them, we grabbed dinner and then popped back out to Blue Cow Ice Cream for an after dinner treat. We all tried something different. I had the chocolate cayenne, mom had carrot cake, Stephen had triple berry crisp and Steve (my stepdad) had mint chocolate chip.
The night before we left Roanoke we went back one final time. I couldn’t not have Blue Cow Ice Cream once more. I decided on a flight (this may have been a bit much, but it was still a decision I don’t regret!). I had 2 chocolate cayenne scoops, 1 fudge brownie and I was intrigued by the blueberry goat cheese swirl so that was my 4th scoop. Stephen decided to have carrot cake after trying mom’s the previous time we’d visited.

The blueberry goat cheese swirl was really interesting and I’m so glad I tried it, but the chocolate cayenne was still some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had. It was the right amount of heat and sweet. Blue Cow Ice Cream in Roanoke, VA will definitely be on my list for anytime we’re in Roanoke or when people ask for recommendations in the area. Make sure you don’t miss it if you find yourself in the Star City.
