Even though Bridge Day 2019 was a little chilly at times, it was sunny all day and so we got a great view of everything going on.
The day after Bridge Day, we planned to go back to the New River Gorge, take the Fayette Station Road, and see more of the New River Gorge National River River.
Unfortunately, we woke up to a day like this…
However, we were only in the area for a short time and decided to check out conditions at the New River Gorge Bridge anyway. It turned into a great, relaxed day of sightseeing and picture taking. So fill your tank with gas, fill up at the Tudor’s Biscuit World nearby and spend your day seeing the beauty of the New River Gorge National River area.
Here’s a map of the area. We started at the top, made our way south to the Thurmond Depot in Thurmond, WV – an old railway town – and ended at Sandstone Falls.

We followed the Fayette Station Road back to Route 19 and headed south.

We stopped along the way to enjoy the foliage.
We then took the road to the Thurmond Historic District.

Finally, we made our way back to Route 19 and drove to Sandstone Falls for the end of the day.

There’s a boardwalk above the ground making the area very accessible, but you can also go exploring at the end of the walkway, climbing over rocks to get closer to Sandstone Falls.
We had a wonderful day and would highly recommend this free day of sights in the New River Gorge National River area. If you’ve enjoyed these images by Shae Pepper Photography, you can pre-order a NHJR calendar by November 15, 2019.
