Having left the Formula 1 US Grand Prix in Austin, Shae and I were feeling hungry as it was about 7pm by that point. We’d noticed a restaurant called P. Terry’s on the way back to our hotel the previous night. It had stood out as the building had an interesting design, so we decided to head there for dinner.
P. Terry’s is a burger joint that Southern Living magazine called America’s best burger chain. That’s pretty high praise, especially seeing as we’ve had some great – and unique – burgers.
Would P. Terry’s Burger Stand live up to the hype or would we have been better off elsewhere? Here’s what we thought.
At the time of writing this review, P Terry’s had just over a dozen locations. As mentioned above, we’d noticed their restaurant at Capital Plaza because of its interesting building design. Interestingly for a franchise restaurant, all their buildings seem to have a unique design rather than them going for a homogeneous look.

The eating arrangements seem to differ at their restaurants too. Some are drive-through only, others include patio seating, while others also have indoor seating.
Their restaurant at Capital Plaza had outdoor seating with a sand play area for kids…

…along with indoor seating. We decided to eat inside seeing as it was fairly cool out that night.

One of the first things I noticed was fun music playing inside; they seemed to be playing 50s classics even though the restaurant didn’t have a 50s diner kind of feel.
You place your orders up at the counter which is where you can find their menu. They don’t have a particularly extensive menu, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as it makes it a little easier to decide what to order.

As you can see, their prices are pretty reasonable. I ordered a double burger combo (minus the cheese), while Shae went for a cheeseburger combo.
I hadn’t realized at the time, but you can sit down at a table while waiting as they’ll call your order number a few minutes later for you to collect your food.
My double burger was pretty good. It’s wasn’t the very best burger in the US (Southern Living magazine definitely oversold it), but it was tasty and good value. Their fries were nice as well; they don’t seem to salt them like some restaurants do, so we added some ourselves.

We’d both ordered combos but the cashier hadn’t heard Shae asking for a combo so we’d only been given one cup for soda and one serving of fries. We were actually glad our order hadn’t been taken correctly as that one serving of fries was plenty for the two of us to share.
Shae also enjoyed her cheeseburger. She isn’t usually a big fan of special sauce, so ordered it on the side.

Seeing as we were at a burger joint, we felt like we also needed to get shakes. We went for our usual flavors – strawberry for me, chocolate for Shae. The shakes were excellent – both thick and flavorful.

Overall, we were pleased with our decision to stop at P. Terry’s for dinner. Their burgers and fries were tasty and good value, while their shakes were excellent. While not quite as good as Southern Living tried to make out, they’re worth checking out if you’ll be in Austin, Texas.
