Our favorite restaurant we ate at during our two weeks in Mauritius was Sunset Filaos. It’s a small restaurant we came across on Google Maps while looking for places within walking distance of the Le Méridien hotel we were staying at in Pointe aux Piments.
That hotel wasn’t great (you can find my review here), but staying there did mean we discovered Sunset Filaos. After eating there one evening, we enjoyed our meals so much that we ate there every night for the remaining three nights of our stay.

The restaurant has their menu in both French and English. Here are the prices; for reference, at the time we visited in January 2023 there were ~40 Mauritian Rupees to 1 US Dollar.

The first night we ate there Shae decided to get the fresh fish. The fish is so fresh that they bring you out a tray for you to select which specific fish you want to have cooked for you. There were a number of different types of fish to choose from; Shae went with the parrotfish.

After ordering my meal too (the chicken curry), we took a seat inside as it was due to rain. The restaurant has two tables inside that can seat up to four people at each.

When the weather’s nice, there are several tables just across the road you can sit at which look out at the ocean.

I decided to get a samosa as an appetizer that first night. It was delicious, so I was initially sad that I hadn’t ordered more. It turned out to be a good thing I didn’t get more though as my entrée ended up being more filling than I’d anticipated.

I’d ordered the chicken curry and rice which came with a side salad. In my review of our stay at the Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa, I mentioned that we had two of the best curries of our life at their Indian restaurant there. Well, the chicken curry at Sunset Filaos rivalled those for quality.
It was absolutely delicious. It was perfectly spicy both in terms of its flavor and also in its heat level. The curry had so much flavor, I couldn’t believe that this random restaurant would create such a tasty dish. Something to be aware of – and the owner did give me a heads up before eating it – is that they cook chicken on the bone. That helps enhance the flavor, but it does mean you have to be careful when eating the chicken pieces. The flavor was worth the effort to pick out the bones though.
The salad was great too, coming with a very nice dressing (I think it was some kind of garlic dressing).

Shae loved her fish as well. They gave a choice of red sauce or white sauce on top, so Shae picked their red sauce which was apparently a little like a marinara sauce. It came served with fries, garlic bread and a side salad which ended up being more food than she could finish. Looking back at the menu, it says that this is enough for two people (especially if you pick one of the larger fish), so that explains why!

As I mentioned earlier, we returned to Sunset Filaos every day for dinner after that. On our second day we decided to live it up with a shot of rum; that ended up being a generous pour and was probably closer to two shots.

Shae had tried my chicken curry the previous day and loved it as well, so she ordered that. Despite loving the curry, I wanted to try more items on their menu and so got their lamb sauté. The menu says that it comes with garlic bread and salad which is what I had, but I think they offered rice as an alternative to the bread if I’d wanted it.
This lamb was delicious too. Nicely seasoned and mostly very tender, this dish was more filling than I’d expected too. As with the chicken curry, the lamb came served on the bone.

We’d gotten chatting to the owner Sachin both of those first times we ate there. He encouraged us to return the following day because at the weekend they’d be doing a grill. Honestly, we didn’t need any encouragement to return, but we couldn’t wait to try their grilled food too.
In order to try a variety of what they were cooking, the owner suggested he do us one plate with lamb and one with chicken. Both of these came with a chicken sausage, salad and bread.

Not only that, but he gave us a plate of fried noodles too. We’d seen someone eating that the night before and it looked delicious. Sure enough, it was!

The weather was nice out that night, so we decided to sit outside while the sun was setting over the ocean.

This ended up being a ton of food, so we decided to share some of the meat with a small friend who’d sidled up to our table. He sat staring at us with adorable eyes, so we couldn’t resist.

On our final night at the Le Méridien we returned to Sunset Filaos for one last meal. We were running low on cash and there wasn’t an ATM within walking distance, so we both ordered a serving of the fried noodles with chicken and egg as that was one of the cheaper dishes. At only $5-$6 per person, it was a delicious bargain.
Although we weren’t sad to be leaving the Le Méridienn the next day, we were disappointed that it’d be our last night eating at Sunset Filaos, but we put on a brave face 😉

If you ever stay in Pointe aux Piments, be sure to eat at Sunset Filaos. If you’re staying at a hotel in the area, there’s a good chance that a meal at this restaurant will be much cheaper and much tastier than what’s offered at your hotel.
