Shae loves Christmas more than anyone I’ve ever known, so in December our home was always decorated inside and out with Christmas lights.
The thing is, now that we travel full-time we have no home to decorate. That can’t dampen her festive spirit though and she came up with a genius idea while we were in Australia last year.
We were visiting our friends in Melbourne over Christmas and so the stores were filled with decorations. While in one store, we came across some solar powered LED lights.
Seeing as our car would soon effectively become our home (albeit with us staying in hotels and Airbnbs), why not decorate it with solar powered Christmas lights? They could charge during the day and brighten up our lives at night!

Decision made, we bought a long string of the solar powered lights and brought them back with us to the US. They’d since been stuffed in a case at the back of our trunk ever since we set off on our 5 year road trip on January 1.
Until a week ago.
The night before we left Terlingua, we decided it was time to decorate seeing as it was December by that point. The string of lights was longer than I remembered which meant there was plenty to surround the car.

We started with a ring of lights around the windshield, then started a spiral across the roof of the car leading from the front to the back. The strings of lights was so long, there was not only enough to go over the car a dozen times, but to wrap it around the rear window a couple of times too.

While in San Antonio, Shae picked up some antlers and a red nose to adorn our car. Like I said, she loves Christmas! And yes, that is a PG Tips monkey wrapped in garland on the dashboard 😉

By day, our car looks like a slightly colorful Pinhead from Hellraiser. But by night it looks like it could be pulled by Santa’s reindeer themselves.

There was one slight downside to how we decorated the car though. Seeing as the lights were wrapped across the roof of the car both inside and out, the strands were low enough that they tickled the tops of our heads. We’ve therefore had to attach some twine to tie them a little higher inside as it was driving us crazy!

Still, it’s a small price to pay for having the most beautiful car on the road this December 😉
Love the Christmas car!
Thanks! It’s fun driving along at night with the lights on 🙂
Fantastic. Glad you managed to get the doors shut! Have a great Christmas.
Thanks – you too!
