“Let’s go tandem biking,” she said.
“It’ll be fun,” she said.
And you know what? She was right!
Shae had searched online for free walking tours in Savannah, Georgia and came across one that takes you through all the squares in Savannah.
In case you’re not familiar with Savannah, it’s a beautiful city filled with historic homes. Throughout the neighborhoods in the historic district, there are 22 squares where residents and visitors can go to relax.
Rather than walking through all the squares in Savannah, Shae suggested renting bikes and touring the city that way. To add to the fun, we decided to rent a tandem bike; this was the first time we’d ever ridden a tandem bike, so it was quite the adventure.
We wanted Truffles to join us on the experience, so she went in her special backpack.

We were staying at an Airbnb around the corner from Forsyth Park, so we walked a few blocks to Savannah On Wheels. They had tandem bikes available to rent which cost $30 for four hours – that was plenty of time to find our way around all 22 squares in Savannah.
Two single bikes would’ve also cost $30, so renting a tandem bike cost us the same and meant we had a more unique experience. That cost included a bike lock and cycle helmets (although we decided not to use the latter.)

Despite it being our first time on a tandem bike, it was easier than we’d anticipated. The most important part was communicating when one of us was going to stop pedaling as that stopped the other person from pedaling too.
We started off at Franklin Square and headed east until we reached Washington Square. You’re not allowed to cycle through the squares, although you can dismount and push your bike through if you want to spend time in any of them.

We then headed south down Houston St until we reached Greene Square. From there, we headed west a couple of blocks until we reached Columbia Square.

At Columbia Square, we stopped for a quick breather and then went live on Facebook to share our journey from there to Oglethorpe Square.

From Oglethorpe Square, we continued westward to take in Wright Square and Telfair Square.

From Telfair Square, we took our tandem bike south to Orleans Square, then headed back east to take in Chippewa Square and Crawford Square.

From Crawford Square, we went southwest for about half a dozen blocks until we reached Troup Square before continuing west along Harris St.

Normally, the next square would’ve been Chatham Square as that’s a few blocks south of Pulaski Square. However, Chatham Square was the closest square to Savannah On Wheels where we needed to return the tandem bike, so we decided to make that our final square.
As a result, we cycled southeast to Whitefield Square, then made our way back west to Chatham Square.

Final Thoughts
Visiting all 22 squares in Savannah by tandem bike was a great idea by Shae. We got to see much more of Savannah, experienced something new and – best of all – we didn’t fall off the bike!
If you visit Savannah, Georgia, it’s definitely worth visiting all the squares, whether by foot or by bike. If you decide to rent a bike, we can highly recommend Savannah On Wheels – they were extremely friendly, helpful and had decent prices for bike rentals.
n.b. This isn’t a sponsored post; we paid for our bike rental with Savannah On Wheels – we just had a great experience with them and so wanted to recommend their company.
Used to work in downtown Savannah. Rode my bike to work sometimes and had lunch most days in Reynolds Square or Johnson Square. I noticed that Savannah on Wheels also rents ebikes. I love ebikes! Even though Savannah is pretty flat, if you aren’t in great shape, the ebikes give you just enough pedal assist that you feel like you are 20 again! I miss spring in Savannah–all those azaleas everywhere and all the other flowers too. Some years it seemed like all the flowers bloomed at the same time–glorious! (but achoo!)
I’ve never ridden any ebikes but I’d love to give it a go sometime. I think we had lunch in Johnson Square one of the days we were there on our way down to River St – I’d happily eat lunch there every day if we lived in Savannah.
Thanks Shae for taking our picture by the fountain in Forsyth Park. Judy and I finished our trip in Sarasota, Florida. Fun to keep watch on you two. We also enjoyed Savannah and the history. The cobble stones on River Street which came over on ships that acted as ballast. The hospital that was used during the civil war. The history of the cemeteries. And more.
Safe travels and let us know when you get close to ND our native state and MN our home state presently.
