Last Saturday was both my birthday and the day of Portsmouth Humane Society’s Cause For Paws Festival.
Shae had volunteered to help out by having Truffles be part of a puppy kissing booth. People at the festival could get a kiss from Truffles in return for a $1+ donation to PHS.
I’d wanted to sleep in, so I walked down to the festival late morning once Truffles was all kissed / licked out. After wandering round to check out the different vendors, we stopped for breakfast at The Coffee Shoppe on our way home.
Review: The Coffee Shoppe, Portsmouth VA
The Coffee Shoppe can be found at 300 High St, opposite the Children’s Museum. Although it’s fairly small, it’s a popular place for locals to hang out. It’s also great for pet owners as there are three tables and several seats outside, so you can bring your dog (as we did).
Shae knew what she wanted, so I headed inside to look at the menu as I wasn’t too sure what to have.
As you walk in, the counter is on the right and there’s tables and seating along the walls to your left. In keeping with the Olde Towne feel, there’s quite a bit of exposed brick. There’s a small fridge with soft drinks by the counter, along with a display case with muffins, pastries, etc.
There are menu boards on the wall behind the counter, along with a specials board on the counter.
The General’s Breakfast Bowl and The Benedict sandwich were tempting, but I settled on the grilled breakfast burrito. I also placed Shae’s order – a lightly-toasted everything bagel with cream cheese. It was already 85-90° outside that morning, so I grabbed us a couple of bottles of water too.
As the photos of the menu board aren’t very clear, here are some pics of the paper menu:
If you live in or are planning a visit to the Hampton Roads area (Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and other nearby cities), it’s worth getting an Entertainment book in order to save money at local attractions and restaurants.
I mention that because there’s a coupon for The Coffee Shoppe in the 2017 edition (there’s been one in there the last couple of years too). It gives you a free menu item when ordering another menu item, so that knocked a few dollars off our bill.
After placing our order, I went back outside where Shae and Truffles had grabbed a table and chairs. We got chatting to a family at the table next to us who’d come down to Portsmouth for the day from Fredericksburg. Their kids loved Truffles and kept her entertained (or it might’ve been the other way round).
About five minutes later our breakfast was brought out by a server:
My burrito was really good and hit the spot. I’d ordered it without cheese and they’d made sure there wasn’t any in there. They’re fairly generous with the sausage and other ingredients, so you get a good mix of flavors. The eggs and sausage also got the Truffles seal of approval.
Shae’s bagel came lightly-toasted as requested and was a pretty good bagel.
Summary
The Coffee Shoppe in Olde Towne Portsmouth is a great place to stop and get a drink and a bite to eat. They’re reasonably priced, have a decent variety of sandwiches and wraps and are great for dog-owners who want somewhere to stop.
I’ve been in the Coffee Shoppe a few times and the service has always been average. I’ve never had a bad experience, but have found the service to be a little indifferent.

Truffles Approval Rating
Truffles gives The Coffee Shoppe four paws out of four. They’re dog-friendly and they serve the kind of food that makes her lick her lips.
She thinks they might also provide water bowls on request, but she had her own water with her when we visited so didn’t need to ask for one.
